2nd INTERNATIONAL BIENNIAL of SCULPTURE ART and NATURE

SCULPTURAL PARK OF RINCÓN DE ADEMUZ

VALENCIA, SPAIN

With the intention to nurture with works of art the Sculptural Park of Rincón de Ademuz, the 2nd International Biennial of Sculpture ART and NATURE of Rincón de Ademuz has been summoned. This Biennial does not have any precedents in art contests. Once again sculptures will be exhibited outdoors during two years, that is, until the next edition. A prize award will be granted. The participating artists will choose the best work among all and they also will opt to other prizes.

Rural life is a topic that consents to reflect the sensibility of artists, life in the countryside, traditions, work, activities, fauna, flora, leisure, amusement, etc. The exhibition ART and NATURE without any doubt surpasses our borders and makes of the Sculptural Park of Rincón de Ademuz a cultural reference for the lovers of art, nature, tradition and the environment.

The fact that a work is selected to participate in the Biennial is already a prize in itself. The work will remain as an integrated part of the exhibition ART and NATURE of the Sculptural Park of Rincón de Ademuz for two years and there's the possibility of being bought by the Patronage or "Fund of Acquisition of Sculptures", at a price fixed by the artist, which would allow it to become a permanent piece of art of the Park.

The Biennial will publish a catalogue-book (double page) for each sculptor where next to his/her works, his /her personal data, picture and artistic career will be included. A catalogue-book will also be published and a web page be created in Internet.

The prizes will have a positive impact on the artists, as this will allow the author to keep the property rights of his/her work. The prestige of the Biennial will increase -most contests that grant cash prizes keep the works- and so the artist will be able to sell his/her work at a price set by him/herself.

The Sculptural Park of Rincón de Ademuz is a reality for which an enthusiastic team under the direction of the sculptor Lucas Karrvaz has been working for the last four years with the intention to recover and capture the historical tradition of our district in the most modern forms of artistic expression, without breaking the harmony of the landscape nor attacking the environment.

The Sculptural Park is something alive. Every two years the Biennial of Sculpture will incorporate new works into the permanent exhibition. By this way a continuous renovation is assured where the new works are integrated together with the permanent works of the Park and they share stage with a series of sculptures that recover the traditions, culture and gastronomy characteristics of our land.

The Sculptural Park is not located in one place only. The sculptures are placed in all the villages that compose the Rincón of Ademuz integrating themselves with nature, in such a way that it will require to go to their encounter, although sometimes the works themselves are the ones that will go out to meet us. The best way to visit the Sculptural Park to follow any of the trekking routes that cross the Rincón of Ademuz. These routes were opened in October 1999 with the sculpture "The Walker" that represents the first step and, as such, is also the first work installed in the Sculptural Park of the Rincón de Ademuz.

The physical attendance of the author of the work is not mandatory for the Biennial. However, only those that personally attend the Biennial are entitled to vote for the Prize for the best work.

RINCÓN DE ADEMUZ

Rincón de Ademuz is a unique place located between the counties of Teruel and Cuenca (Aragón and Castilla) and separated from Valencia to which it belongs for a fringe of 14 Km. It was the first land conquered to the Arabs by the King D. Pedro II of Aragón. The Spanish Courts agreed on January 27th, 1822 to annex the villages of the Rincón to the county of Teruel, agreement signed by Fernando VII and derogated 20 months later by the same monarch, 20 months during which the inhabitants of the Rincón manifested their dissatisfaction by all means to their reach and they were not satisfied until by popular voting on October 1rst, 1823 they recovered their condition of valencians.

The inhabitants of the Rincón have an authentic vocation as valencians which they show when they say "although we are castilians and we feel as aragonese, we will never give up to be valencians." The natural and administrative isolation of this lands have largely contributed to maintain intact their traditions, preserve a popular architecture that subsists in perfect balance with the environment and keep their peculiar flora and fauna. It may well be that the Rincón is so far one of the scarce places of Spain where still one can still find otters.

The Rincón de Ademuz has a surface of 370 Km2 and is formed by the villages of Ademuz, Casas Altas, Casas Bajas, Castielfabib, Puebla de San Miguel, Torrebaja and Vallanca together with the villages of Arroyo Cerezo (El Royo), Cuesta del Rato, Los Santos, Masada de los Mudos (La Masadica), Más de jacinto (La Masada), Más del Olmo, Negrón, Torre Alta, Vall de la Sabina (El Val) y Sesga.

The Rincón is a group of towns and places where visitors can find pure nature and set out their own preferences according to their wishes for what we only will indicate that its vegetable garden is showered by the rivers Turia, Ebrón and Boilgues. The Calderón Pick with the high of las Barracas, is the highest point of the Valencian Community with 1839 meters.

We could not forget the "Cruz de los Tres Reinos" (Cross of the Three Kingdoms, today situated on the border share by three provinces), historical point where in 1412 the reunification of Spain started, few days after the Commitment of Caspe where the agreement took place, the regents of the Kingdom from Castile, Aragón and Valencia met around a stone table that still remains and where the embassies of Aragón, Catalonia and Valencia notified Fernando I Infant of Castile his appointment like King of Aragón and Sicily. Although the popular tradition says that the three kings met and each one was sat down in his kingdom, truth is that only one king was there. To perpetuate the memory of that meeting the scene will be recreated with a sculptural group that will remain in the Park.

Since we talk about history, it would be necessary to add that Diego de Marcilla, "lover of Teruel" together with Isabel Segura, was descending of the Garcés de Marcilla family born in Torre Alta, village of the Rincón.

In any season of the year and mainly in spring and summer, visitors can enjoy different events where nobody is an outsider: "Hogueras de San Antón" (blazes) in Casas Bajas and Torrebaja, "plantada del chopo" of Casas Altas (cutting and planting a black poplar in the village), the human peal of the bell called Guillermina in Castielfabib (a young man embraces the bell and tumbles with her), "toro de fuego" (bull with fire at the horns) and the most affectionate festivities of each village in the Rincón.

In agriculture we can be proud in the Rincón de Ademuz of having the best apples, among them the esperiega, an autochthonous variety, single in the world.

Rural tourism also has it charms in the Rincón. New houses have been built and old traditional houses have been rehabilitated, a restored mill has been put on again into operation and in the winter months "the slaughter" takes place and the visitors have the opportunity to participate in a family party of vital importance to the family economy several decades ago.

The first edition of the Sculpture Biennial of El Rincón de Ademuz, has been a fact without any precedents in sculpture contests. It has been the first time that works have been integrating for two years the Sculpture Park Art and Nature and the first time also that in a contest the selected artists have chosen the best work of the Biennial. Accidentally Jury and artist voted for the same sculpture.

The Sculpture Park Art and Nature, in a single edition has exceeded our borders and has turned our "corner" in a cultural visit and datum point forced for lovers of art, nature, tradition and environment. In the first edition 70 works of 45 artists from 17 countries were selected. Nevertheless the second edition is officially summoned as an International Contest and its objective is to continue nourishing with sculptures the Parque Escultórico ARTE Y NATURALEZA of Rincón de Ademuz.

The subject continues to be RURAL MEANS, because it is lent to reflect with the sensitivity of the
artists life in the field, traditions, customs, work, activities, leisure, diversion, flora, fauna etc.

The fact that a work is selected to participate in the II Biennial, is an award in itself. It receives the Bronze Apple and integrates during two years the Park Art and Nature of the Corner of Ademuz; in addition, it has the possibility of being acquired by any of the sponsors or by the Fund of Acquisition of Works, at a price fixed by the artist. Then it would definitively integrate the Park. In an act without any precedents in art contests, the artists themselves choose the best work of the Biennial, they opt to other settled down prizes too, a catalogue-book is published and a Web in Internet is created.

The Sculpture Park ART and NATURE of the Corner of Ademuz, is an ambitious project in which an enthusiastic team has been working for three years under the direction of the sculptor Lucas Karrvaz who determines to recover the historical tradition of our region and to shape it in union of the most modern forms of artistic expression, without breaking the harmony of the landscape nor attacking the environment.

The "Parque Escultórico" is something alive. Every two years through the Biennial of Sculpture, new works will be in permanent exhibition until the following edition. This will make sure a permanent renovation. The new works get integrated with those already definitively installed in the Park and they share scene with a collection of sculptures that allow to recover traditions, culture and own gastronomy of our country.

The Sculpture Park is not located in a determined site. The sculptures are scattered among all the villages that compose it and are integrated in the nature, so that visitors have to go to its encounter, although sometimes they appear in our way: for the best visit follow any of the path routes that cross the Rincón inaugurated with the sculpture The Traveller that represents the first step on the way and was also a first sculpture step for the further creation of the Sculpture Park of El Rincón de Ademuz.
